Charles A. Lindbergh was the best-known airman of his generation. For almost half a century his comments on aeronautics, politics, society, and technology helped shape the thinking of his fellow citizens. In spite of the enormous amount of newsprint expended in the examination of the public Lindbergh, his impact on aeronautics and American life have remained clouded. As a contribution to the fiftieth anniversary of the epochal 1927 transatlantic flight, the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space museum invited five scholars to offer their views on selected aspects of Lindbergh's career. The annotated versions of those papers are offered in this volume, together with the most complete Lindbergh bibliography assembled to date. The text is illustrated with forty photographs, many previously unpublished, selected from Charles Lindbergh's own collection. Designer Donald Hall's complete technical notes on the construction of the immortal Spirit of St. Louis, and the introductory remarks by Michael Collins, director of the National Air and Space Museum complete the book. The essays and collateral materials combine to give the reader insights into the character and manifold impact of this multifaceted man. Lindbergh the pilot, the technologist, the political commentator, the ecologist, and the philosopher are all represented in this well-integrated portrait of an extraordinary American.
