Innhold:Innhold:
It was just eleven years after the Wright brothers' first flight that World War I broke out. Aviation was still in its infancy and nobody took flying machines seriously as weapons.
All that was to change very quickly. The friendly waves with which opposing pilots at first greeted each other soon gave way to attempts to shoot down enemy aeroplanes with pistols and rifles. Almost at once, an arms race was in progress which produced in rapid succession new generations of faster, more manoeuvreable adn better armed aircraft.
But it was always the brave pilots who captured the public imagination. These knights of the air did not enjoy the glamorous lifestyl that was generally supposed; instead they endured awful provations brought on by extreme cold, oxygen starvation, exhaustion and stress.
But their courage and gallantry was never in question, and this is the story of the best men and the machines of their day
