Salmon has been crucial for Norwegian, and for the country’s identity and culture. The North Atlantic salmon stock had been in decline for many decades, and by 2021 it was red-listed. The primary reason for this situation is commercial salmon farming. This industry now has substantially greater economic importance for Norway than the North Atlantic wild salmon.
Political measures have been implemented in response to the challenging state of the North Atlantic salmon stock. In recent decades the state has allocated ever more resources to strengthen the wild salmon. But simultaneously the political level reveals limited willingness to intervene in the aquaculture industry. Therefore, the struggle to protect North Atlantic wild salmon stocks is increasingly characterized by mitigation measures and now emerges as much as cultural heritage work as a biological rescue operation.
