From the Publisher With September 11 having redefined world values, the question of restoration is a major issue. David J. Bean develops an analogous case around the discovery, recovery and restoration of a military seaplane that, just before WWII was acquired by a nation that was about to be occupied by a terrorizing invader. Unable to use the plane as planned, the conquered nation flew it from a strategically located base in the mid-Atlantic, as part of the Allied victory over the threat of tyranny. "The Restoration" relates how this plane helped restore the nation to its country and subsequently how its own restoration restored the spirit of the team that had produced and operated it. In essence it is a story of the victory of the spirit of man through teaming: the restoration in one of an ascending cycle from the physical to the spiritual.
From the Author Though WWII leaped onto the world stage with a sudden blitzkrieg of Poland, for most of the eventual major Allied participants it was slow in gathering true "world war" scope and magnitude. For Norway, this period of relative rest ended shortly after the blitzkrieg of Poland when, in early 1940, the country was overrun.
Northrop had won a contract to supply Norway with a coastal patrol aircraft capable of operating from the smooth-water fjords that dominate Norway's coasts. As news reached the Northrop team about Norway's occupation and the courageous escape of large numbers of its armed forces determined to continue fighting from friendly bases, the team immediately identified with the cause and needs of the refugees. The employees working on the airplane, knowing it was going to join the Norwegian cause, followed the news of the Norwegian's exploits closely as they were transmitted back to the factory.
That the airplane could and would be used to fulfill a mission it was not designed for is itself a minor miracle for this airplane or any small seaplane, for it was never intended or thought able to operate off the open sea. Yet these courageous, determined men and the rugged little airplane did exactly that to the ever-lasting astonishment of people who followed the outcome.
About the Author David J. Bean not only knew Jack Northrop - the founder of present-day Northrop Grumman Corporation, he worked for him. He started work at Northrop Aircraft, Inc. in 1946, after serving as an Air Force pilot during World War II. He retired 38 years later, having been manager of new business proposals and Aircraft Group program manager for 22 years. Though officially "retired" he still is an active pilot, teaches instrument flying at Long Beach City College, and actively makes the lecture rounds covering the story behind "The Restoration."
