But for many people, it is the very existence of armies which, they belive, maintains the peace - the mere threat of retaliation being enough to prevent the outbreak of war. Captain Hans Vanmaele is a 27-year-old Belgian fighter pilot in 349 Squadron based at Beavechain, part of NATO's air defence force. His story is the same as those of thousands of other front-line pilots based in Europe - East or West. Today, Hans is flying an F16 in an exciting two-by-two dogfight, where one pair of planes pretend to be 'the baddies' and one pair 'the good guys'. This highly dangerous and thrilling test is the climax of his 'Pair Leader Check', an examination which will give him much greater flying responsibility. Captain Vanmaele does not see himself as a war maker. 'I am the first one to say "No" to war because I am going to be the first on, and I don't want to be killed. Peace has to be the first objective. Without peace, the other major problems in the world cannot be solved.' | Eier: | Norsk Luftfartsmuseum | Eksemplar: | 1. (1 tilgjengelige) | |
