Rob J. M. Mulder has studied the history of the first airliner for Det Norske Luftfartselskap, Fred. Olsen & Bergenske A/S called Ternen. It was a single-engine Junkers W 34hi that became a familiar sight along the Norwegian coast and its fjords throughout the mid-thirties of the last century. Later it was transferred to the night air mail service between Oslo and Copenhagen and flew during the last summer before the Second World War in northern Sweden on aerial photography. In addition it was used for ambulance sorties, instrument flying courses and training and joy flights
The author first gives a general description of the development of the type. Than we follow the construction of the aircraft right up to the day of delivery in May 1935. This part includes also a detailed description of nearly all equipment found on board. Also, most flights performed between June 1935 and September 1939 will be described. There is also a reconstruction of the aircraft’s final days.
The author has received help from Nils Mathisrud, a well-known Norwegian modeler, who has described how to built a model of this Junkers W 34hi. Kim Brantenberg had previously made a color profile of the aircraft, but after receiving new information from the author he made two now drawings and in addition made a three plan color view. Of the appendixes of the book we can mention a full description of the engine, copy of the Certificate of Air Worthiness, Certificate of Registration, the Hand-over-document and some First Day Letters connected to Ternen or the routes it operated.
