Nordic crime control present, past and future.
The term »Nordic exceptionalism« is sometimes used in the international cri-minological and criminal political literature to explain why the Nordic countries are in so many ways considered models of good crime control. In the book, Crime and Justice in Scandinavia (2012, edited by Michael Tonry & Tapio Lap-pi-Seppälä), you can find the following statement: »Compared with most develo-ped countries, most strikingly the United States, Scandinavian criminal justice systems are and long have been humane. Citizens have confidence in the systems and its officials: their perceived legitimacy is high. Punishments are moderate, prisons are small and decent, and few people are locked up.«
This article deals with the international image of Nordic crime control and the sources of that image. Furthermore, it provides an overview of the time when the present foundations for Nordic crime control were constructed (»The Golden Age of Nordic Cooperation«), the development after that, the situation at the present, and the forecast for the future. The core question is whether the international pic-ture of Nordic crime control is a constructed ideal image or whether it is suppor-ted by empirical findings. | Del av verk: | Nordisk tidsskrift for kriminalvidenskab 3/2013 |
