But that changed when the media’s interest in crime increased andpolitical parties started to design policy programmes based on ideology. Individual politicians saw a possibility to profile them selves in order to get more personal votes in elections. Since the 1990s, the criminal policy debate has been governed by the mediaand heavily influenced by politicians' demands for quick and tough action.
