Innhold:We describe the first initiative in space geodesy in Norway in 1958, immediately following the dawn of the space age. It opened new research directions in astronomy at the University of Oslo. A satellite tracking station, funded by the US Air Force, was operated as part of a global network of stations. This contract provided state-of-the art equipment and job opportunities for young scientists, but the rapid increase in the number of satellites filled the observing time available and did not allow the instrument to be used for individual research. Oslo Space Track Station became a service unit in the USAF Space Track program, but delivered data that contributed to development of global gravitational models of the Earth and world geodetic reference systems.
