Det tidlige 1900-tallet var gjennombruddstid for utbygging av vannkraft i stor skala til industriformål, og Norge var en pioner på området. Teknologiske begrensninger på overføring av strøm gjorde at industrien som skulle bruke kraften, og de tilhørende industristedene, måtte legges nær kraftkilden. Gjennombrudd for overføring av høyspent elektrisitet og begynnende samkjøring av strømforsyningen på 1920-tallet endret de tidlige premissene for lokalisering av mottakerne. Mange av anleggene som ble bygget ut på denne tiden, er nå viktig nasjonal og internasjonalt anerkjent kulturarv. Denne artikkelen vil fokusere på utbygging av vannkraft og dens rolle i stedsutvikling i tidsperioden fra ca. 1900 og tiårene fram mot andre verdenskrig.

Abstract
The early 1900s was a breakthrough period for the development of large-scale hydropower for industrial purposes, and Norway was a pioneer in the field. Technological limitations on the transmission of electricity meant that industries, and the associated company towns, had to be located close to the power source. Breakthroughs in the transmission of high-voltage electricity and the beginning of the coordination of the power supply in the 1920s changed the constraints on the location of the recipients. Many of the sites that were developed during this time are now important national and internationally recognized cultural heritage. This article will focus on the development of hydropower and its role in local development in the period from around 1900 to the decades leading up to the Second World War.
