From a student engagement perspective, we examine how four active learning methods (collaborative, problem-based, experiential, and participative) influence student well-being and performance satisfaction. Based on a survey (n = 255) of university/university college students, we found no direct influence of the four active learning methods on student performance satisfaction. However, we did find influences of the methods on student well-being and also influences of student well-being on performance satisfaction. A mediation test showed that the influences of the active learning methods on performance satisfaction were fully mediated by student well-being. Analyses of the interactions between the active learning methods indicated the challenging nature of combining experiential or participative learning with collaborative learning. Implications for theory and teaching are discussed, including suggestions regarding how teachers can design courses to stimulate student performance satisfaction.
